According to the Albuquerque Public Library, “the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway (the AT&SF, generally known as ‘the Santa Fe’) looms large in the railroad history of the Southwest. The AT&SF and its many subsidiaries served a wide area of the Southwest, from its being chartered in 1859. While never actually directly serving Santa Fe (the expense of running a line through the mountains being seen as not cost-effective by the AT&SF, Santa Fe was served by a spur line from Lamy 18 miles away, this branch line paid for by bonds generated by area residents), the AT&SF parlayed the Santa Fe name into a worldwide brand, drawing thousands of visitors to the American Southwest. In conjunction with the Fred Harvey Company the AT&SF offered visitors spectacular landscapes along the railway, fine accommodations at the Harvey Houses, and tours to cultural, archaeological, and geological sites.” Here are some of those sites:

• Narrow Gauge Scenic Byway: a scenic 9-mile drive
• Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad in Chama
• Raton Station: built around 1904 and still in use today

• Castaneda Hotel in Las Vegas: one of the remaining Harvey Hotels
• Las Vegas Station: built in 1899 and still in use today
• Lamy Station: built in 1909 and still in use today

• Santa Fe Rail Trail:
• Gilman Tunnels: part of the former Santa Fe Northwestern Railway (SFNW) through the canyon which was used to haul lumber from the Jemez Mountains. The railway opened in 1924
• Albuquerque Alvarado Transportation Center: on the site of the demolished Alvarado Hotel
• Albuquerque New Mexico Steam Locomotive (and Railroad Historical Society): the NMSL&RHS restoration site is open to the public for free ‘hard hat’ tours (weather permitting) every Wednesday and Saturday from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM
• Albuquerque Santa Fe Railway Shops: where the Railyards Market is held
• Los Lunas Station (Depot): built in 1879, next to Daniel Fernandez Youth Center
• Belen Harvey House Museum
• Los Lunas Luna Mansion: built as a gift by the Santa Fe Railway
• Tucumcari Railroad Museum
• Fort Sumner Railroad Bridge
• Magdalena Boxcar Museum
